Do All Holes That Dogs Dig Lead to China?

Sometimes I wake up in the morning and have no idea what I'm going to post on the blog (like yesterday and today).* I used to get really stressed out about it, but with time, I've learned to just go about my day as usual, and most of the time, something inspires me. (If not, I just go through my photos, pick something cute and put the word "random" in the title. :)

But anyway, today, as I read through some other dog blogs, I saw a couple references to the phrase "my dog dug a hole to China," and for the first time in my adult life, I questioned the validity of it. Not whether a dog (or anyone) could actually dig through the planet, but whether my dog (if he could HYPOTHETICALLY dig a hole that deep) would actually end up in China?

So how long do you think it'll take us to get to China?

But not only that, is this phrase "digging a hole to China" used only in North America? Or do dogs all over the globe mysteriously dig to the same place? And what about dogs in China? Do they dig to North America?

Is anyone else with me???

You should know that because I suffer from some degree of obsessive-compulsive disorder, I couldn't stand not knowing the answer, so I googled "digging a hole to China."

North American readers pay attention: If you think your dog might be digging to China, guess what? You'd be WRONG. Your dog will actually end up under the Indian Ocean somewhere off the west coast of Australia. Talk about a bubble-burster. :(

(Those of you NOT in North America can go here to see where your dog would end up.)

Is that China? What's it supposed to look like?

But I'm still wondering of my non-North American readers: Do you even use the phrase "my dog is digging to China?"

Will you let me know in the comments so I can sleep?

Thank you. :)

*It's safe to come back tomorrow. I've already planned what I'm posting. :)

  1. Bunny's been working on a trip to China for the past three years, and she'd have gotten there, too, if her meddling dad didn't keep filling the hole back in!

  4. Good thing the dogs do stop digging for dinner, or we'd be in a heap of hurt. Or would that be an ocean??

  5. I'm interested in if international dogs dig to China or not too!

  6. Here in Lithuania both dogs and kids dig holes to China - funny, isin't it? Although poor guys would end up somewhere between New Zeland and Antarctida... Well, I don't know about the kids, but I think dogs innately know when and what turns to make to end up in China to have a chat with panda or two :)

  7. Since the inhabitants of the mother-in-waiting pen always make an effort to get to China, and since you're saying they'd end up in the Ocean, are there any little islands for which they can aim? Although the huge plume of water that would result when they broke through would be entertaining, it might be hard on the digger.

  8. In New Zealand and Australia we dig to China too ... although reading Gabiko's comment it seems we'd end up in Lithuania:)

Most days I have no idea what to blog about, which is why I usually only blog twice a week:)

  9. Right now, yours is the only blog I absolutely HAVE to read besides mine.

    Honestly and drooly.

Coming here is like taking a break from the self-generated insanity of my days.

    Love and biscuits!

  12. To all - THANK YOU so much for chiming in! :) This is now my favorite random post that-almost-wasn't! I'm just cracking up that seemingly, all dog (and probably kid) holes DO eventually end up in China. Even those in New Zealand, which is in the same hemisphere as China! (I haven't heard from anyone in Asia, though, so maybe I shouldn't celebrate just yet.)

I'm thinking there should be a new show on TV about the secret cosmic plot (or destiny) of dogs to burrow through the earth and unite (in China). There've been worse things on TV. Anyone remember Alf?

@Houndstooth - Clearly the time has not come for the dogs to begin their journey. The day we all simultaneously just let our dogs go for it to their hearts' content, should be a sign that China should get ready for something big...and rumbly. :)

@Two French Bulldogs - I like digging for gold. :) Especially since I've managed to freak myself out a little bit about the cosmic plot.

@Wyatt - Yes, clearly getting to China is going to require GPS.

@24 Paws - Ha ha. You'd be in some "hot (or maybe cold) water." :)

@K-Koira - I think now you know more than you ever wanted to.

    @Gabiko - So hilarious!

@Penni - Yeah, that would be some geiser in your back yard. :)

@Greyhounds - Yours is my favorite answer! :) Wouldn't it be more like a gopher tunnel from New Zealand to China?

Once a week blogging is awesome. :)

@Laurie - It's like watching a train wreck (where no one gets hurt), wouldn't you say? :)

@Nea - Thanks for visiting! I love it!

@Scrappy - I have no doubt you would have figured it out on your own - but then again, maybe that's why you found my blog - so you could get ready to dig. :)

  13. Here I think it is more of a childthing than a dogthing, on the other side my dogs dig holes only for the pleasure of having a good mudbath in them :)

  14. Oh no! We can't actually dig to China? Just another lie we were told as children :(

  15. LOL I think I knew that digging through would not have you end up in China. Bubble burst!

  16. I think all the dogs better think twice before digging to China......dogs are often on the menu down there....just saying

PS My verification word was "exual"...is that something to do with having sex with your ex? :-) Sorry. I've had a couple of glasses of wine after an unsuccessful day of agility :-)

  19. H! My dog used to dig so much we used to say the same thing. I think he was just looking for all the bones he buried.
