Copping a Training 'Tude

Dewi and I have Week Three of obedience training tonight. We'll be focusing on Dewi's least favorite thing to do when told - heeling.  Although we've practiced, he's still pulling like an ox in certain situations - namely when we're around new people and other dogs (= training class).  The sheer anticipation is making my muscles tense up.  Joy.

Out of desperation, I'm taking a (new for us) super yummy (but otherwise yucky) heeling treat - Slim Jim.  If Jim can't glue Dewi's nose to my left knee, I don't know who or what can.

Detention Bound?

  1. Yup, I can't imagine Dewi not liking Slim Jims!

Do you have any recommendations for obedience classes? The place we used for Rufus went belly-up after only two lessons and, um, we didn't do anything else. We're getting a second one in the first part of March and I want to definitely do a better job this time!

  2. I think the Dude Ranch Pet Resort isn't too far from either of you (Glen Allen) and they offer training. http://www.duderanchtraining.com/ I haven't gone to any of their classes but I've been to the facility and it is quite nice.

Ring times are posted for Doswell on the 30th - 8am :(

  3. Thanks! I know where The Dude Ranch is, but don't have any experience with them. Looks like they offer a lot more in the way of prerequisite obedience for CGC and performance than RDOC does. After this Basic Obedience class with Dewi, we're kinda out of options at RDOC, other than to repeat Basic or start Rally. I will do some further poking around about the Dude Ranch.

Builder Mama - We've been going to Richmond Dog Obedience Club. http://www.rdoc.org/
It's around the block from the Sears Outlet in Richmond's near West End. They do AKC STAR Puppy, Basic Obedience (no clicker training though) and a CGC prep course (if that's a goal of yours). Aside from that, they are heavy into performance, especially Rally and Agility. If you decide to use them for STAR Puppy, sign up EARLY; those classes fill QUICKLY. We've enjoyed meeting other dog folks out there - there's a very active member who owns Cardis (and looks out for us).

How exciting to be getting a new one! Where is he/she coming from?

  4. Dina - forgot about your Doswell comment. Should I just plan on getting there a few minutes before 8 (I know I need time to park, pay and find the right ring)? Should JF come in through the front door with me? I know people can be funny about "extra" dogs coming into the venue.

  5. Re: Doswell. There are 20 some dogs on before Cardigans so getting there at 8am shouldn't pose an issue. No sense in all of us getting up at the crack of dawn :) Cardigans are in Ring 6. Scope out how they have things set up. If they aren't charging admittance at the door, then just walk right in w/JF. Alternatively, they will almost certainly have side doors propped open and bring him in that way. Looking forward to seeing you!

  6. Ooh, I know exactly where that is! Not far from my office, actually. The puppy is (hopefully, if everything works out) coming from Tennessee...don't want to say too much yet, I'm scared of jinxing it! I'm going down on 2/11 to see the little babies and will know more after that. I'm so excited!!!

  7. Hmmm. I know of a litter in TN right now.... Wonder if it's the same? If it is, we'll be in-laws.

  8. Red Dog Mom...it is! So yes, we would be in-laws. :-) I am so excited, both parents are gorgeous, great bloodlines, great owners. I'm almost scared to get too excited. We haven't even told our son yet, it will be a huge surprise!

  9. Hmmm, might that be an Ocho baby? Me = jealous. (But I don't need a puppy.)

  10. I'd say having two one-year old dogs definitely makes you exempt from a puppy for a while! Rufus was 5 months old when we got him, so this is my first foray into real puppydom. I'm skeered but excited too.

  11. My Moira is Scout's sister and Sam is their grandfather - so you are in-laws w/Elizabeth too since Jonny is a Sam son. Welcome to the Samily. If there's anything I can help w/I'm happy to. Ear taping, toe nail Dremelling, etc.

  12. Okay so Moira and Scout (in the grand Samily) are Jon's and Georgia's nieces and that would make Scout's pups their grand nieces/nephews? I don't know how you keep up with all of Sam's babies!
