Blogger-to-Blogger Grammar Tips: How to Avoid Homonym Hades (illustrated with funny pet photos)

A few prerequisite definitions:

  Hades: (loosely defined...by me) The place where the practically dead (from loss of readership, due to chronic -- and potentially humiliating -- misuse of homonyms) blogs go.

I wish.
(t-shirt image via Mental Floss store)
  Homonym:

<> (loosely, from wictionary.org): A word that sounds or is spelled the same as another word, but has a different meaning, technically called a homophone (same sound) or a homograph (same spelling).
(A few examples that I thought of: gross, pile, dog, dew, do)
{Come on, y'all, it's me, here. What kind of thoughts did you expect?}
Note: In the aforementioned examples, the first three words (each) have multiple meanings, but are identically spelled, while the last two only sound the same.

<> (my own definition): A word(s) invented by a smart@ss, pun-loving and/or lazy person who couldn't be bothered to think of something original.*
(Good grief, as if there aren't enough unique letter combinations in the 26-letter English alphabet!)

Oh, and just on the off chance you think this post only applies to the few and far between blogger/grammar dolts (like me): its, it's, their, there, they're, buy, by and bye are homonyms, too. (Note: If you've never, in your life, typed any of those words incorrectly, then you might be a grammar rock star, and could get bored reading the rest of this post. Unless, that is, you like self-deprecating** humor, in which case, read on.)

This is awkward.
But not as awkward as when you accidentally publish crazy words on your blog.

Practically-a-homonym: (my own definition): A word that sounds almost exactly like another word (often only differing by one or two letters), but has a completely different meaning.
Example: **deprecating and defecating
Hint: For the love of all that is dignified and good, friends, don't mix those two words up. Just don't.

 *******

So, as the title indicates, I'm sharing this not as an expert grammar scholar, but as a blogger who has typed her share of homonym mistakes. And not because I've been policing other blogs for errors, or because screwing up homonyms is one of my pet peeves (no, if that were true, I'd be perpetually peeved at myself).

What I am doing, however, is sharing some tips I've learned (in my nearly 3 years of blogging) for how to avoid making common (and not so common), potentially humiliating (personal examples to follow) mistakes using the wrong word(s) in your blog posts (or any other public, self-edited writing). In other words: because I don't want you to make my mistakes. I hope they help!

1. WATCH SPELL CHECK!

And by watch, I mean: Don't rush to select a suggested word, especially if the word you're using is one that you've never (or rarely) written before! When in doubt - even by the slightest hair - LOOK UP the meaning of the word! It is because I misspelled "Enunciation" with an "A," and as a result, selected "Annunciation" from the list offered by spell check, that I published this (highly embarrassing) post title (in 2011):

The Importance of Annunciation When Including a Dog in Your Holiday Card Photo Shoot

Thankfully, a concerned reader e-mailed me with my mistake only minutes after the post went live. If not for her, the title might still be out there (for horrified readers all over the globe) to this day.

(Also, the irony that I screwed up the post title because I hadn't enunciated "enunciate" is not lost on me.)

Hahahaha! Heeheeeheee! Harharhar!

2. PROOFREAD beyond spell check!

Think spell check is gonna catch the time you type "there" for "they're"? "Who's" for "whose"? "Flee" for "flea"? Of course not! Run spell check and then read through your (entire) work. Then - if you have the time - close it, take a break and then read it again.

3. Study and memorize common homonyms.

Is it second nature for you to type "its" (vs. "it's") for the possessive of "it"? Do you know the difference between "affect" and "effect"? Are you fazed that "phase" and "faze" are frequently confused?

The good news is that there are hundreds of online resources that list (ad nauseum nauseam***) the more common homonyms that typically trip people up in writing. Try Googling "commonly misused homonyms." You'll see what I mean.

*** It might make you nauseated to know that the phrase "ad nauseam" is commonly misspelled "ad nauseum." ;)

As a matter of fact, there is such a word as "throe." It rhymes with "ho," bleeches.

4. READ! READ! READ!

Ever heard the saying "you don't know what you don't know"? Well, let me tell you, there will be times when you just flat out use the wrong word (because you simply have no idea that it's wrong), and neither hades nor high water will be able to stop you. Like the time I published this title (in 2011):

'In the throws of a mid-life crisis, Tigger decided to cover her pesky gray hair'...

In all fairness to me, though, how the heck was I supposed to know that "throes" was even a word, much less correctly use it?!

Well, I'll tell you: By READING (other people's writing)! Lots and lots of it!

Wanna know how I know this?

Because FIVE MONTHS LATER, after that absurd post title had lingered out on the interwebs for thousands of (Pinterest-clicking) people to see (and probably snicker at), I read the same phrase (but with the correct spelling of "throes") somewhere else. And you know what? I laughed. Okay, NO I DIDN'T, I (used "fudge" as an expletive and) fixed it! And then (in humiliation) wrote a post titled Please, Won't You Be My Editor, in which I implored you, my readers, to inform me whenever I do something so completely NOT-brilliant, again!

Dang it, what was the point of that tirade?!

Oh yes, READING!

It's simply the only way to build one's vocabulary (short of studying the dictionary, or a dictionary-like application) to include more of the less commonly written homonyms, like "throes," for example.

So, who wants to take down some homonyms today?! ;-)

Do you have any other tips to share?

* Let it be known (and I think Shakespeare himself would agree) that there might be at least three positive arguments for the existence of homonyms:

1. puns 2. euphemisms 3. double entendre

With that said, proceed at your own risk! ;)

P.S. Should you find an homonymic error in this post, please spell "it" in the comments. Thanks!

The Photo I Wanted to Post Yesterday (had I not fallen asleep at the keyboard)

That's Maddy (aka Maddox) looking out my bathroom window.

Last night at 11 p.m. (when I sat down to compose this post), it (the photo) hadn't been edited yet. Nor did I have a title for the post. And I couldn't put two sentences together, because my eyes were crossing.

About 37 minutes later (as my head accelerated toward the keyboard), I startled awake with a string of drool puddling at my collar bone.

So I went to bed.

In 18+ months and 405 published posts, until yesterday, I had never missed a regular blogging day without telling my readers (you) in advance.

I thought I'd feel horrible about it, but you know what? Lightning didn't strike me down, the Internet didn't cry out in disbelief, and the blog's still here recording my blathering blather.

In an odd way, I feel liberated.

My pajama shirt is also liberated...from drool.

But back to Maddy (in the above photo, which has been heavily doctored -- because my good camera is still at the Nikon factory repair shop -- at Picmonkey.com).

The first time he sat in that window and looked out, he squinted because the sun hurt his eyes. It dawned on me then that the only times, in the years he's been a resident at the shelter, that he's had a window view to the bright outdoors were the few times he's been in foster care.

And my eyes welled up with tears.

A few moments later, Maddy yawned in my face and his dragon breath (from his prescription canned food-only diet) made me clasp my nose and gag.

Then Dewi and Jon Farleigh barged in the room and all hell broke loose.

Well, anyway, the moment was awfully sweet while it lasted.

Maddy is sweet, too, even if his breath could curl paint.

And on that note, I think you all need to have a sweet (not stinky) WEEKEND!

~~~~~
Just one more thing: In 18+ months and 406 posts, I've never taken more than a couple days (here and there) respite from thinking up posts for this blog. I think it's time for me to give my poor, tired and aging brain a break. So (deep breath), I'm taking all FIVE days next week off (that's M-F). Yes, indeed I am.
Unless I get a wild hair and don't, in which case, you should severely chastise me for not sticking to my guns. ;-)
My rested brain will see you soon!
Tigger Meets the PicMonkey (and I go bananas)
I just love PicMonkey (both the name and the place). I might have mentioned some of this before...
Anyway, I got some cool photos of Tigger the other day; I was outside looking at birds' nests and she was inside wondering what the heck I was doing outside. :) She even tried to touch me through the glass with her paw.
See?
I used the Urbane effect (at PicMonkey.com) on this one.
(Notice Eva's feet dangling over the edge of the bench in the background.)
For this one, I used the Tranquil effect.
And for this last one, the Intrepid effect (the pollen on the window is not part of the effect).
(I think Tigger's actually trying to touch my face here. So sweet! Unfortunately, though, five seconds later, the dogs realized where I was and proceeded to shove her out of the way with their noses.)
Okay, that's all for today.
Be sure to check back tomorrow evening for the survey results (speaking of which, you can still take the survey, if you haven't already)!
So Long, Picnik, It's Been Fun
...frolicking in the warmth of your Polachrome sun.
In your final hours, know that I'll remember you fondly
Each time I go bananas with your cousin, PicMonkey.
***
The sun will set for the final time tonight on the popular photo editing site Picnik.com.
But there's good news:
PicMonkey.com, created by the makers of Picnik, is darn near just as awesome (some things are actually better). And I should know; I've tested it.
See?
Basic color editing at PicMonkey.com
And one more...
Straight out of the camera
Basic color editing plus "Urbane" effect at PicMonkey.com
You really should go and try this with your own photos!
Ta-ta!
P.S. Here's a nice, more detailed review about the basic capabilities of PicMonkey.com.
Hope you have (had) some time to chill today!
P.S. I haven't decided to quit replying to your awesome comments; I'm just going through a lazy, post-sick, need a mental and physical vacation phase. Replies will return soon. And, thank you for not writing bad things about me on a public bathroom stall.  ;-)
Which came first, the crazy blog or the crazy blogger? aka My 2010 Doggie Holiday Card
The official start date of this blog is December 29, 2010. Here is that first post, from the archives.
~~~~~

My daughter and I had fun making the card. :)  It really was sweltering the morning that I took the picture, but I just had to get the fire in the shot.

Here's my original post on MyCorgi.

2011 Editor's note: We had fun MAKING the card (at fotoflexer.com). But because this was my first blog post and I was too timid, I was ashamed to come right out and say that I'd rather take a sharp stick to my eye than repeat that miserable photo shoot

I'm so glad I no longer have to pretend that I have a corn cob lodged, well, you know where!!!
(What a difference a year makes.)

~~~~~
So there you have it, folks. The finished product of the nightmarish photo shoot. I guess it was worth it.
Would you like to see a couple other uncut photos from that day? Yes? Okay, here you go.
Do you smell burning hair?
We're sorry, you must have us confused with dogs who would
do anything for their unbalanced person.
:)
It's a crazy time of year. Try not to go crazy this weekend!
Fun with Picnik - Cardigan Corgi Optical Illusion
I took a perfectly unimpressive photo and did this to it at Picnik.com. Do you notice anything odd? :)
(And I'm not talking about the brick texture.)
Scroll down to see the out-of-the-camera photo.
I have no idea why Dewi wanted to try on Jon Farleigh's head that day.
Please, won't you be my editor?
(Apologies to my beloved childhood "neighbor," Fred Rogers.)
Did you know that today's date is 11/11/11, which only occurs once every 100 years? Well, you do now. :)
For today's post, I tried to think of something doggie-like that would fit with the theme of the number one, but all I could think of was the color yellow. The truth is, it wasn't meant to be. That's because this morning, as I was looking over my blog, hoping to get some inspiration, I discovered a gross grammatical error in one of my older post titles.
It wasn't a dangling pawparticiple (or even a dangling preposition); that would be nothing to "sneeze" at. No, this was much worse. Well, why don't I just let you try and find it, here:
'In the throws of a mid-life crisis, Tigger decided to cover her pesky gray hair'...
Hint: I highlighted it.
FYI: If you click that link, you will see that I have already corrected the error. The word should be "throes," not throws.
Now, it's not like I wrote that post, no one read it, and I never saw it again ('til today). It just so happens that it's in my top 10 most clicked pages (who knew so many people google images of Ann-Margret with cats??), and I've seen the title like 264,511 times - completely oblivious to my error. Until today.
Disclaimer: Did you know that it's been scientifically* proven that after age 40, half of one's brain cells that control memory and eyesight go on extended vacation in The Hamptons (or someplace equally exclusive outside the US)? It's true.
*I know it; therefore, it must be true. :)
So anyway, there I sat this morning, noticing yet another unsuspecting googler had gotten to see Tigger in a wig when - as if someone unseen had passed my tired brain a memo - I realized that after all this time and hundreds of clicks, NO ONE HAD tactfully TOLD ME WHAT A DINGBAT I AM.
(Note: All caps yelling does not equal bitterness.)
If it seems like I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, you're probably right. It's just that in the future, when I make another grammatical mistake (the kind of mistake that cannot be classified as a typo, and will likely cause some readers to chuckle and/or wonder when/if I will ever get a clue), will you kindly drop me an email?
Would you want me to do the same for you? I really want to know!
*****
So there. I have said my peace (not piece).
Thank you and carry on with your (not you're) great weekend! :)
Bonus: Mr. Rogers singing his song!
P.S. It's (not its) "death knell" not "death nail." And if you're (not your) crying, it's "bawl" not "ball." I might have messed those up, too, somewhere along the way. :)
The Zombie Chronicles of Cardigan
I can't see out of my right eye.
I probably should've passed on that last cup of coffee.
If I close my eye, will it be night?
You'd look like this, too, if you just realized the sun is Eva's eye.
I don't know how to be scary. I just like watching birds.
Ruuuuuuunnnnn!!!!!!!!
(I blame this on Picnik.com. It has taken over my brain.)
Jon Farleigh, Dewi, Tigger, Eva, Lulabelle and I wish you a festive, safe and zombie-free pre-Halloween weekend! :)
Off to call Ghostbusters...
Uh, please pardon our dust...
...the blog template is under construction.
Moooom, I am NOT ready for my closeup!
Do you ever look at your furniture and just want to throw it all out the door and start over?
Yeah, like who can afford to do that??
Don't worry; I'm not starting the blog all over, but while I move it to a newer, much cleaner template and design, you might notice the header and color scheme is a bit wonky.
UPDATE: The template migration is done! Now I just need to get the furniture straight...
Anyway, I think you'll like the new and improved look of the blog; I've been working on it in draft and I'm really excited!
Stay tuned...
Stuff I did this weekend with my new Nikon
I really, really, really like this camera.  :)
No, it's not an SLR, but since I've decided I don't have the patience, time or know-how (or funds) to take on an SLR right now, I could not be happier with this amazing little black memory machine. Point and shoot cameras have come a loooong way since I was a kid.
Okay, so I took over 500 photos plus several minutes of video this weekend - enough to burn up the battery once and then some. I also learned how to delete all the photos and videos on the memory card at one time (unintentionally - oops) and I'm pretty sure I won't need to do that again.  :)
While I still have a good deal to learn and a whole slew of situations yet to experiment with, I thought I'd share with you today a few of my test photographs. :)  (Note: A few do not contain fur.)
Pfffffttt!
Okay, not the best photography here, but pretty well sums up what the dogs thought of my marathon photo shoots.  :)
Rain on windshield, macro mode, no flash. My Olympus couldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole.
I wonder whose eye this is? :) Taken in bright sun using auto mode and zoom.
I still don't know whose grouchy kid this is. :)  Same settings as the above photo, but I used in-camera editing - color selector. The coolest editing feature on the camera.
My kid's eye. ;) Taken indoors in low light using zoom and color selector editing feature.
A ball of Dewi's shedded fur. Long story. :) This was taken in macro mode, an inch+ from the lens. My previous camera could not do this.
Eva. The photo isn't impressive until you consider I took it at 18x optical zoom, in low light, from two rooms away.
In color and untouched. You can even see the massive fur tumbleweed under the chest. :)
Just a regular low-light shot.  My Olympus would've produced a grainy photo with terrible color.
Okay, one smile.
Maybe one more.
All done. :)
*****
Thanks for indulging my photo addiction today! :)
For anyone out there who's in the market for a new point-and-shoot digital camera:
These photos were taken with a Nikon Coolpix S9100. Feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me if you have any questions!
Jon Farleigh's and Dewi's Mugs Blasted into Orbit with Space Shuttle Endeavour
Yes, you read right. No, this is not a kitschy tall tale. The digital likenesses of my dogs' faces are on board the today-launched Space Shuttle Endeavour, thanks to a tip this morning from Taryn, at A Tail of Two Cardis, and NASA's Face in Space program.
Just see for yourself in this photo (click to enlarge):
Okay, so maybe their faces aren't really there (in the Endeavour), but they truly are there somewhere, and after the shuttle returns safely to Earth, we'll get an official certificate from NASA to prove it.
Guess what? You still have time to send your pet(s)' (or your own) mug into orbit with the Endeavour. Just click HERE and get it done before midnight (US Eastern Daylight Time) today.
Corgis Busted
Memo to Jon Farleigh and Dewi:  "Yeah, I noticed. Nice work. Know what? It's my blog; I just let you play in it. Take those words and Tweet 'em - NOT."
In case you missed it, here's what readers were welcomed to upon opening the blog yesterday:
Oh, and the pretty yellow background that you see
had been replaced with yellow school buses.
Pretty fitting for a couple of
Cardigan juvies, no?
Who knows what might have been plastered on the blog today - had I not caught one particular dog in the act of photo shopping. Hint: It was not Jon Farleigh, although as a very bad lookout, he is guilty by association.
Lesson: Dogs are smart. Keep your passwords safe.
How to paint color into a greyscale photo
....using FotoFlexer (online image editor). (The process is probably similar in many photo editing programs.)
Want to learn how to create images like the one I posted on Valentine's Day?  Yes?  Great; now watch and learn. :)
(Please note that the previous statement was made in the most sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek way possible, as there's nothing remotely impressive about my photo editing skills.  In fact, my 13-y-o daughter showed me how to do this, which translates to - no offense to my Eldest Child -  "it's ridiculously *easy*.")
Alright, for this tutorial I'm using another dog-kiss photo (that didn't quite make the Valentine cut).  Here's the "Before" image:
Secret Reveal:  There's peanut butter slathered on her chin, cheeks, nose and forehead.  (The photo was totally posed.)  My intention was to get both dogs "kissing" each cheek, however; Dewi preferred to wait patiently for "his" turn (which he did eventually get).  My daughter is a very good sport.
Here's the "After" image:
Pretty cool, huh?  Would you imagine the peanut butter, etc.?
Before you try and follow the instructions that I'm about to show you, you'll need to upload a photo to FotoFlexer (using the online instructions).
This is How to Paint Color into a Greyscale Photo:
(Notes: On screenshots, I've highlighted buttons to click in yellow. Click on screenshot to enlarge.)
  1. Click the Effects tab on the main screen.
  2. Click the right More button to scroll.
  3. Click the Greyscale button.
    Note: The image will become greyscale.
  4. Click Advanced Options.
  5. In the small box to the right of the image, click the down arrow beside the Entire Image button.
  6. Click Painted Region.
    Note: The image will revert back to color.
  7. Adjust Brush Size as necessary.
    Hint: Go smaller than default to shade in smaller areas.
  8. Use the Brush tool to "paint" the object you want to show up colored in the final image (ex. dog's tongue).
    Hint: It can be tricky to stay "in the lines." I had to make several passes.
  9. Click Invert in the small box to the right of the image.
    Note: The main image - minus the "painted" portion - will convert to greyscale.
  10. Click Apply.
    Result: Your masterpiece!
I also played around with other tabs in FotoFlexer (such as Decorate and Beautify) to eliminate peanut butter splotches, wrinkles, soften background images and add text.
Now, wasn't that easy?!
If you don't have a blog of your own and decide to create your own pet-related image using this tutorial, I'd love to post your finished image to my blog. Just attach it to an e-mail (see my contact info) and include your name and pet's info.
Happy photo editing!
