I'd Love to Write French Ad Copy for Pet-Related Brands, but I Don't, so I Post Stories Like This on Facebook Instead

In my third year of high school French, we got a pairs assignment: perform a 10-minute skit of your choice, in front of the class, and completely in French. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and just hoped that I'd be able to spin it well enough for my partner (a friend) to get on board.

A couple weeks, a stack of French-scripted index cards and several rehearsals later, my partner and I were positioned in front of the class - she standing, and I seated, or I should say - perched - on top of a stool, dressed in yellow, as French Morris the cat - the snarky* star of the (80s-era) 9Lives cat food commercials.

The class hadn't seen it coming, and therefore, was defenseless. ☺

For me, writing and acting in that 10-minute cat food commercial spoof was (and remains) the highlight of my entire high school French career.

How had I not seen the writing on the wall?

Although I went on to take a couple more French classes in college, I never pursued the language, nor pet-industry advertising, as a career.

* The word "snark" didn't exist in the 80s.

This morning on the Today show, in a strange coincidence, there was lighthearted discussion around a British survey that asked respondents to say whether or not they are in the career that they dreamed about as a child. Unsurprisingly, only 6% said they are.

If they'd surveyed me, I'd have been in the 94% majority. I'm not a veterinarian. (Because who in her right mind - between 11-15 years old - aspires to be a French ad copy writer for pet-related brands?!) Besides, I'm pretty sure I wasn't meant to be a vet.

It can be argued, however, that I was meant to write about animals, ad-spoofing very much included. What's still not entirely clear, is whether there will ever be a "career" of it.

By the way, I was born optimistic.

So, what's the moral of this story? Well, it's this: When you find passion as a child - even if it involves talking animals and toilet humor - if you run from it, it will hunt you down and poke you like a stooge, right in both eyes. Only let it poke you once, my friends. Because a true stooge - by the second poke - has mastered the thumb-to-the-nose, sideways-hand, poke-deflecting maneuver.

In other words, don't be a stooge. ☺

And, for the record, I still get the urge to write in French sometimes. Only a little, though, because I'm way out of practice (and the last thing I need is to get shunned by grammarists in both English and French). I had one of those urges yesterday on my Facebook page (such a tolerant bunch, those Facebook peeps). If you recall, I mentioned something about Facebook in the title of this post. Surely, that means I intend to share what I wrote then, right?

Of course! Here it is. It's about Dewi and me. *runs and hides*

Still here? Yay!☺

OK, how about a vintage 9Lives, Morris the cat commercial to redirect your thoughts?!

Gosh, I love 70s and 80s pet food commercials, and Morris. ♥

Here's a fun article from BuzzFeed that claims Morris was the original Grumpy Cat. Although, I don't know that I necessarily agree with that. Morris would never agree to be a meme.

So, has anyone else circled back to a passion you left behind in childhood? Do tell!

9 Ways I'm Crazy About My Dogs - A Photo Sonnet, Presented by #SayItWithMilkBone

(With thanks to Milk-Bone for sponsoring this little love letter; otherwise, it might never have been written. Also, I've used the word "sonnet" quite loosely {poetic license☺}.)

They put up with plenty of shenanigans, Jon Farleigh and Dewi. Especially when a holiday is imminent. And, let me tell you, after four years, they know when those are coming - because they've memorized my routine:

1) Mom goes poking through the "special" cabinet containing all the holiday-themed doggy accoutrements.
2) Out comes the colorful stuff that dogs can sniff, but not play with (nor eat).
3) Mom grabs the little box that she uses to hide her face sometimes, and, oh my gosh, when she does that...
4) Here come the SNACKS*!

And then, there's the dancing - unabashed, up on their stubby hind legs, wiggling for joy, dancing! Completely over the moon that I'm about to plant some awkward contraption about their ears and then expect them to sit still while food is being dangled in front of their noses.

All for a few funny photos that they'll never see...

A goofy blog that they'll never know they were the stars of...

Ultimately bringing about more smiles and uplifted spirits than they could ever claim responsibility for (and those were just my own)!

Holy slimy tennis balls, do those dogs put up with my shenanigans! And, you know what? I am completely cuckoo, bonkers, jumping up and down like a loon, CRAZY about them.

 I said, I'm crazy about them!

(Psst, and now, you say => "How crazy ARE you?!"  Ready?)

How crazy ARE you?!

Well, I'll tell you!

9 Ways I'm Crazy About My Dogs

I am so crazy, that I have a sudden urge to bear-hug butterflies and bees!

I am so crazy, that I have frequent visions of rainbows and Tiggers that bounce!

I am so crazy, that I believe reindeer and leprechauns are real!

I am so crazy, that I'd consider running them for public office!

I am so crazy, that I've stopped being afraid of monsters!

I am so crazy, that I've developed a crush on a cheesy 80s pop star!

I'm so crazy, that I happily include furry family around my Thanksgiving table (on the floor, okay?)!

I am so crazy, that I'd smooch a pooch (with or without the mistletoe)!

Lastly, I am so crazy, that I'm gonna need to wrap this up so I can go bury my hands (and face) in some corgi fur!

(And, no, Jon Farleigh, a snack is NOT out of the question!)

So, I can't be the only crazy one here! Tell me, how are YOU crazy about YOUR dog(s)?

* I, on occasion, feed Jon Farleigh and Dewi Milk-Bone Healthy Favorites® Granola Biscuits and Milk-Bone Essentials Plus+® Optimal Health Biscuits as a daily snack/reward.

Bonus #10...

What the dogs see and what the pharmacist sees at my local CVS drive-thru.

I am so crazy that I make a point to bring the dogs to my local CVS pharmacy drive-thru, because when I do, good stuff happens to them. ☺

Why You Should Give #BarkBoxGifts - a Monthly Dog Box Even Clark Griswold Would Approve of

No, not for himself, you silly! (Ahem. Jelly of the month club?! The "gift that keeps on giving"?! Anyone?) For Cousin Eddie's dog, Snots! My gosh, have you seen what that dog eats?! Eww!

This post is sponsored by BarkBox, but I wrote it, and dangit, I mean every word!

Alright, now that we're clear on that, I have to ask: Do you need to get someone "who has everything" a gift? Concerned that the generic gift card just isn't personal enough?

Well, let me offer a suggestion: Give them (on behalf of their dog) a monthly BarkBox subscription!

BarkBox in a nutshell: A monthly box of dog goodies! Okay, in a BIGGER nutshell (in mostly their words): BarkBox is a (NYC based) company that aims to surprise and delight with monthly gift boxes for dogs. Each box is packed with a combination of 4-6 all-natural treats, cool toys and hygiene products - things you won't find at the typical big-box pet store. The people at BarkBox put lots of thought, research, and time in creating each month's box, from only choosing high quality vendors using top ingredients in their treats, to observing their own dogs putting certain toys to the test.

For more on the story behind the boxes, go here.

Our November box (which aptly had a "comfort" theme). Here's what was in it:
Treats: Bocce's Bakery Truffle Mac & Cheese, Nootie duck yumZiez, N-Bone Twistix vanilla mint dental chews
Toy: Petsafe pogo plush slap happy (unstuffed, with flexible, interior plastic boning and free-floating squeaker)

BarkBoxes are available for small, medium and large dogs, all for the same price.
Hint
: If the recipient's dog is a power chewer, consider upsizing to the next larger size.

These types of people (in my experienced opinion) would be ideal receivers:

1. Those who have (and ♥) dogs. Yes, that would seem to be a given; I'd just like to make it clear that BarkBox toys and treats are for dogs (not people, cats, birds...or even seals or sea lions -  even though they bark).

2. Those who love getting packages full of awesome things in the mail, especially boxes full of surprises for their dogs! (Hint: Not the Grinch, nor Oscar the Grouch.)

3. People who spoil their dogs (and if they can't afford to do it with treats and toys, they make up for it with love)! (See illustration below.)

It's okay. I didn't like sleeping on the bed that much anyway. ;)

4. People who have dogs (like Dewi) who need magic wieners extra high value treats in order to graduate basic obedience and pass their Canine Good Citizen tests. (Note: Just substitute your own scenario here, okay?) :)

Mother load of dogness, what's this?!

All BarkBox treats are sourced from the USA and Canada, and chews are sourced from the USA, Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Sounding like a possibility? Well, hold on; I have more!

Why I Chose BarkBox (for my own dogs):

1. They gave me a free November box to try first. Yes, they did. And you know what? We were so impressed, that I purchased a 3-month subscription for Jon Farleigh and Dewi on the same day the free box arrived! (Think about it: aren't some of the best gifts those you really wanted for a long time, but just couldn't justify spending the money on yourself? Yeah, that's how I felt getting that free box from BarkBox! They just make folks happy, you know?)

By the way, the dogs haven't eaten any of the treats yet, because I told them they had to eat their already-opened treats first. However, I will make a prediction: THEY WILL LOVE THEM. (They eat anything, okay? What's more impressive, though, is that I'm tempted to eat some of the Mac & Cheese treats. Doggone it. ;)

"Must keep a straight face. Can NOT let on that I saw a brand new stuffie in that box."

2. I get a good vibe from the company, starting with the fact that I can go to its website, see and read about the actual people behind it, and get a feel of its culture. (And, I've been following them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and subscribing to their riotous newsletter for months!)

They learned how to take turns in puppy kindergarten. Not. (It's called tug-of-war, friends.
And the score is: JF-1, Dewi-1.)

3. THEY GIVE BACK (10% of revenue) TO ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS, including my local Richmond SPCA!

Are you ready? Awesome! Here are a few good things to know before ordering:

1. Gift subscriptions are available for 1 month ($29), 3 months ($72), 6 months ($114) and 12 months ($199). The longer the subscription, the better the deal. Shipping is included.

2. You'll need the recipient's email address when placing the order. BarkBox will send the lucky person a (cheerful) email, letting them know they've been gifted and requesting their contact information.

Here's to happy gifting and happy dogs!

"Credits"

I heart you; therefore, I'm gonna tell you strait-up:
I've written this post on behalf of BlogPaws Pet Blogger Network for BarkBox. I'm being compensated for helping spread the word about BarkBox, but The Chronicles of Cardigan only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers.
Always.

Tip: Hover over the video and click the mute icon to hear Dewi give BarkBox a 4 (out of 4)-bark approval rating!

Thanks for sitting through the credits. :)

5 Less Obvious Reasons Why I'm Thankful For My Dogs (and How You Can Help #ShakeItForward)

Note: This post contains a must-see, funny talking animal video, but first, because it's almost Thanksgiving, I'd like to share five (less obvious) reasons why I'm thankful for Jon Farleigh and Dewi:

1. They never complain about my cooking. Ever. Even when I do this to the burgers:

The middles were still perfectly edible, you know.
The dogs ate them. Because my kids wouldn't.

2. They follow me everywhere, so I'm never lonely

Never...

...ever lonely.

3. They help keep the cats from running amok, and creating a state of anarchy.

Jon Farleigh = Feline Anarchy Prevention Specialist (FAPS)

4. They are a collective 70 pounds of double-coated fur blanket, for when I'm cold.

And if the heater broke and there were no more fires, I'd have enough of their soft, downy undercoat to make several sweaters.

If I knew how to spin yarn...and knit.
(Can you imagine? I could call them cardigan cardigans!)

5. But I think the thing I'm most thankful for is...how they just flipping make me laugh!

Especially when they're laughing at me! ☺

What makes you thankful for your pet(s)?

~~~~~~~
And now...it's FUNNY VIDEO TIME!
And helping to feed shelter pets time!
Can I just interrupt your train of thought for a second to say...
that is the cutest dog treat container I've ever seen.
And it's a turkey, for
ThanksgivingOK, thanks for listening.
So, last month, Iams Shakeables (a soft, chewy dog treat in a fun, shakeable can) partnered with producer Andrew Grantham to make an adorable Talking Animals video for channel fans, as well as help needy shelter pets. For every view of the "Punk'd Puppy" video, or social media share of the #ShakeItForward hashtag, Iams pledged to donate up to 250,000 bowls of pet food to designated shelters around the country. That goal was met and exceeded.
But...
Earlier today, Iams announced that due to such overwhelming public response, with Thanksgiving just a few days away, and in the spirit of giving, they are going to #ShakeItFoward with Shakeables again, doubling their pet food donation to 500,000 bowls! That's half a million meals for homeless shelter pets! And all we have to do to get in on it is watch a funny video
Look! There's a talking German Shepherd in it and he's hilarious! Did you ever see "bacon dog"? It's by the same producer!
Guess what? Iams Shakeables is going to donate a bowl of food to a shelter pet...BECAUSE OF YOU!
THANK YOU!
#ShakeItForward and share the hashtag!
Necessary small lettering for ill will prevention:
I've written this post on behalf of the BlogPaws Pet Blogger Network for Iams Shakeables. I'm being compensated for spreading the word about the Iams #ShakeItForward double down donation, but we at The Chronicles of Cardigan only share things we feel are relevant to our readers.
You know we do. :)
Hey, you know how in certain comic book movies, there are extra scenes at the end of the credits?
Thanks for staying until the end of the credits. ☺
By the way, Middle Child is shaking a can of Iams Gobble 'Em Up turkey shakeables. I bought them at the grocery store. Just to see whether the boys would pay attention. They did. :)
Soapy Corgis, Dog Packs Online and OMG, Facebook Ads Work!
Note: If you came here for the Facebook stuff, and don't like looking at adorable, soaped up Corgis getting baths, then you can just...um...well...
...click here to skip over the dog stuff. I'm very sorry, though, that you missed out on all the happiness in between. :*(
So, a few two of you might recognize some (or all, if you've been following since the olden days, when I was wearing a size smaller) of these photos. None of them are new; it's just that I'm about to talk about spending money on Facebook. And for some reason, that made me think of going to the cleaners and/or taking a bath, so naturally, I wanted to post photos of the dogs taking a bath. Except, I didn't feel like staging baths just for the photos, plus I'm tired, and my creativity is bobbing for air in a toilet bowl somewhere, sOOOOooooo, I'm posting these re-run pics instead.
But, I promise, they're still as cute as ever!
I call it: Forlorn.
Oh where, oh where have Jon Farleigh's ears gone...?
Yes, they're both Dewi. No, as a mater of fact, I can't stand the cuteness. :-)
And, speaking of cute, have you heard of Pack (packlove.com)?
It's a startup (still private, invitation-only beta) social platform for dogs and their people, divided up into breed (plus blends and Heinz 57 variety) packs. Within each "pack," there is a (gorgeous) profile page for every dog (photo provided by dog owner, obviously). Here is Jon Farleigh's (in 2 parts - it's big):
Killer of Ladies, indeed!
So anyway, if you haven't yet, and you like being social with your dog (online at least), you should go over and take a look. Remember, though, that the site is still a cyber "baby," with lots of fun functionality still in development. What's not in development, though, (because I've been subscribed for over a month) is a weekly e-newsletter for your dog(s)' particular breed/mix. And, it just so happens that I'm the author/curator for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi newsletter, and you can sign up for it RIGHT HERE, if you want! ;-) You don't have to be a member of Pack to subscribe (not yet, anyway).
Having fun yet? I hope so, because this is the part where I talk about:
(And, if you don't give a flying flip about them, then this might be a smidge boring.)
#1: For as little as $1 (max) spent per day (for however many days you specify), you can run a Facebook ad for your blog/business fan page.
If you have a fan page already, I know you've seen the Boost Post button under all your status updates, and I'm sure you've received at least one pop-up from Facebook, prompting you to create an ad to promote your page. And perhaps, if you've clicked either a Boost Post button or pop-up ad, you've seen the pre-filled $10/day budget in the ad generator (which might have prompted you to roll your eyes and/or mutter expletives for wasting your precious time). I mean, who the heck has $10/day to blow on a Facebook ad for a blog?! I certainly don't.
The thing is, if you really do want to boost a post (say, for example, you just began a contest, or an awareness campaign), for a budget as small as $1/day (hint: you can change the $10 in the ad generator to $1*), you can exponentially increase your post engagement. (As an "experiment," for $5 total, I did it for my Frosty Paws giveaway and increased my post engagement from an avg. 200, to nearly 9,000. It works.)
Or, if you've got a goal to increase your page likes (perhaps you've been simmering around the same number for a while), for the same low daily budget of $1**, you will get them (and I'm not talking about random strangers; these are bona fide fans - most likely in the same demographic as your existing fans - who wouldn't have clicked "Like" if they didn't want to follow your page). (I've been running a $1/day-budgeted ad for one week, which has generated 57 new page fans, many of whom are fellow Cardigan Corgi people. For perspective, my Facebook page has been around since March 2011, with pre-ad, avg. new likes at 10/month. So, in a week, I've seen over a 500% increase! The ad is working.)
Please know that I understand there are other ways to attract Facebook fans, that don't involve paying Facebook. Clearly, I could probably stand to research that a bit more. But, that's not the point of this post. I simply want to share (my anecdotal evidence) that IF you choose to run a Facebook ad, and you have an existing loyal Facebook base, you will most likely see significant, swift results. Additionally, the Facebook Ads Manager makes it easy to edit, pause, delete and track most every detail of your existing ad(s). (In other words, the "delete" button isn't buried three-layers-deep in some obscure place on Facebook Help.)
So, has this been helpful? Has anyone else tried Facebook ads?
As always (because this information has been fairly high-level), I'm happy to answer any questions!
* The minimum daily budget cannot be less than $1. I tried.
** The amount you spend per ad, per day will never be more than your budget. Facebook charges are calculated based on CPM (cost per impression), meaning that you are charged each time someone clicks your ad. Therefore, it is possible that if your ad generates few clicks, you'll spend less than your daily budget. Conversely, if your ad-clicks quickly reach your daily allotment (per budget), Facebook will pull your ad for the remainder of the day (so your budget is not exceeded).
Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post. Facebook's britches are much too big for the likes of little ole me.
P.S. Have an awesome day! Thanks for reading! And "liking"! I heart y'all!
This Is Where I Talk About the Big Honking Ad on My Blog
To monetize or not to monetize the blog. That was the agonizing question.
So you might have noticed that I recently got a big shiny ad in my sidebar. Well, actually, it's a series of rotating ads, including some of a non-paid, public service nature, like Petfinder.
Yes, I have monetized the blog. I am one of many pet bloggers who are now part of the newly launched BlogPaws | BlogHer publishing network. Bloggers in the network earn a small commission per page load (or ad view), whether the ad is clicked or not. It takes lots of page loads to even earn a penny. I knew this up front.
The thing is, I never wanted ads on my blog. I dislike clutter. I need colors to match. I hate waiting for pages to load. And pop-ups getting in my way. I was okay with having a no-income blog. Then, out of the blue, I got an invitation.
An invitation - as an existing BlogPaws member - to apply for membership in the publishing network. My heart went all aflutter. Since I knew my blog met all the joining criteria, my mind was already celebrating the potential income. Something - as a stay-at-home mom - that I hadn't received in over four years.
And yet, I still hated the idea of seeing an ad on my blog.
So I did some research and talked it over and decided that being associated with the BlogHer organization might not be so bad. It certainly couldn't hurt to try.
Two days later my blog was approved. The next move was up to me. I'd have to accept or [politely] decline.
To monetize or not to monetize the blog. That was the agonizing question.
Thank goodness I only got 48 hours to make up my mind. I tossed a lot those nights, worrying about things. Like what if:
  • people think I'm a money-grubber
  • people get mad and stop visiting
  • the ad colors clash with my blog background
  • people think I'm a shallow money-grubber
  • people talk about me being a shallow money-grubber and stop visiting.
    (I might be a worry-wart. :)
And then I remembered that I don't have a paying job. And I accepted the offer.
I was relieved that the network permits bloggers to opt out of certain ad categories, and I promptly did so - except for candy and non-R-rated TV and films. In my mind, those were the least likely to offend anyone. :)
In the first week after I installed my ad code, I was served nothing but public service ads (PSAs). That was great. I earned nothing from them, but it would give me and my readers time to adjust to the prominent new space on my blog.
Another no-paid-ad week and a chat with the BlogHer Help Desk later, I opted back into a few things. And slowly, but surely, they arrived. Paid ads I had once vowed not to place on my site. And I was filled with regret.
Then - in a stroke of perfect timing - there appeared on my blog, a camera ad in an eye-catching sea glass-green and red design. A good, reputable camera, too. An ad like you might see on a site with WAY more readers than mine, or even in a popular ladies' magazine. And all that regret I had felt began to slip away.
What the heck was I thinking?! I thought. I might only earn $25 in a year,* but that's $25 more than I've earned in the last four! Bring it on!
You do realize you have to split that $25 three ways, right?
*To date, I've earned just over $3 (includes two weeks with nothing but PSAs).
Since that epiphanic moment, I've grown more and more comfortable with the ads. To be honest, they've started to grow on me in unexpected ways. For instance:
  • The color schemes are harmonious interesting, mostly.
  • Every time I load my page I get a surprise.
  • They can make me feel immature little again (Shrek, anyone?).
  • I sometimes yearn to eat cook (with butter and large kitchen appliances).
  • Or have an Irish coffee (Irish cream, please). (My favorite brand, too! How did they know?) ;)
Who knows? One day an ad might even inspire a blog post (it could happen).
*****
And that, friends, is the story behind the ad.
The elephant in the room made me tell it.
Thank you for listening.
Feel free to ask questions.
Have a happy weekend!
